Spindrift 2: From crew records to solo racing

Geschrieben von Marcel Krebs am .

"With Spindrift racing, we are tackling the records held by this boat, which is the largest in its class. To beat them, we must optimise the machine," Antoine Carraz, the technical manager and a sailor with Spindrift racing explains. "This year, we are doing crewed and solo. We made choices to be able to perform in both pursuits. It also allows us to explore avenues of innovation for the Jules Verne Trophy, the flagship objective of our campaign with Spindrift 2."

vo14-1

Enkhuizen, The Netherlands – February 3, 2014 – Australian navigator Andrew Cape is back for his sixth Volvo Ocean Race with Team Brunel, reuniting with his former skipper Bouwe Bekking. Aged 51, Cape first took part in the race in 1993-94. He entered five editions since then, including in 2005-06 when he sailed with Bekking on movistar. Cape’s addition to the team as navigator only feels natural to the Dutch skipper, now at the helm of Team Brunel.

Day 5 and the remaining boats racing in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race had a slight respite from prevailing weather conditions as the southwesterly moderated to 20 - 25 knots over night into this morning (December 30). Unfortunately for Roger Hickman's Wild Rose, any chance of upsetting Victoire as overall handicap leader went by the boards with the diminishing breeze - at 4am AEDT when the boat needed to finish, it still had 35 miles to go. ONE MORE TIME

While not the record-setting pace, Wild Oats XI still made her indelible mark in the record books, taking the line honours win at the 2013 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race. Close reaching up the Derwent River, the 100-footer crossed the finish line off Battery Point in Hobart, at 7:07pm local time (AEDT). Wild Oats’ elapsed time of 2 days, 6 hours, 7 minutes, 27 seconds gave skipper Mark Richards and crew their seventh line honours win, which ties the record held by the yacht Morna/Kurrewa IV.
